The Power Of Colour Psychology

Have you ever walked into a room and suddenly felt a shift in your mood? It may be because the walls were painted a soft blue, or perhaps the sofa was a bold, fiery red, a surprising choice for a sofa, but undeniably striking. Or maybe one day back in school your mum decided to make you wear bright orange shoes and everyone in your class made fun of you. It might have left you with a lingering dislike or even a strong aversion to that colour. Funny how colours have such a powerful impact on how we feel, isn’t it?

I’ve experienced moments like this many times myself. For instance, whenever I see the colour blue, it instantly lifts my mood and fills me with happiness. But it’s not just blue, other colours influence me too. Some days, I might choose to wear a green shirt because it gives me a sense of motivation or inspires me to take action. Another example is when I am browsing online, I can’t help but be drawn to vibrant colours. Whether it’s clothing or book covers, anything bold and bright immediately catches my attention, and I am quick to click on it!

Colours have the ability to trigger specific emotional responses. For example, blue and lilac is often associated with calmness, trust and creativity. Red is usually linked to energy, and urgency but also signifies danger. Similarly, green is often connected to balance and nature. The emotions associated with colours aren't limited to just these, there are countless others!

However, the impact of these colours is not universal by any means. Individual reactions to colours can vary based on their personal experiences, cultural influence and even memories. For example, someone might find blue comforting because it reminds them of the ocean, while another individual might find it melancholic due to something unfortunate that must have occurred.

This variability in colours highlights the nature of colour psychology, while certain colours often evoke shared emotions, the way each individual responds is deeply personal and shaped by their unique journey.

Over time, I’ve grown more aware of how deeply colours influence my emotions, mood, and even decisions. This is the essence of colour psychology, the way colours subtly yet profoundly affect our inner and outer worlds. It’s incredible to think that something as simple as a colour can hold such power over how we feel and act. It’s a reminder of just how interconnected everything in our environment is with our experiences and emotions.
